Motimagz’s lifestyle & online correspondent Keegan Chipato (KC) had a chat with Gladys Chibanda (GC) to discuss more about her entrepreneural journey. Below are some excerpts from the interview which were done in question and answer.
1. It’s a great pleasure to have you here Gladys, Could you kindly please introduce yourself to us?
Thank you so much for having me! My name is Gladys Chibanda, and I am the Founder of Krafted Ink Packaging and Design Studio, where we specialize in unique Afrocentric, climate-smart branding solutions. I am also privileged to serve as the Vice President of the Internet Society Zimbabwe Chapter, where I’m deeply committed to driving digital transformation and empowering communities, especially women, with digital skills. My work is fueled by a passion for creativity, innovation, and making a meaningful impact in my community.
2. You’re notably the founder of KRATED INK, and The Vice President of the Internet Society Zimbabwe Chapter. Could you give some insights into what comprised your entrepreneurial journey?
My entrepreneurial journey has been a blend of creativity, determination, and a deep desire to make a difference. Founding Krafted Ink was born out of a passion for design and a vision to bring unique Afrocentric, climate-smart branding solutions to life. It was about creating a brand that not only stood out creatively but also embraced sustainability and celebrated African heritage.
On the other hand, my role as Vice President of the Internet Society Zimbabwe Chapter has been equally transformative. It has allowed me to channel my passion for digital innovation into initiatives that empower communities. These initiatives especially support women and small businesses. They provide the tools and skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
The journey hasn’t been without its challenges—navigating limited resources, building networks, and balancing multiple roles. But every obstacle has strengthened my resolve and taught me valuable lessons about resilience, collaboration, and the power of purpose. Today, I’m proud of the impact Krafted Ink and the Internet Society are making, and I’m excited to keep growing and contributing to a brighter future.
3. Let’s take a look into the Digital Marketing industry. What are the ways do you think we can create to help foster digital literacy amongst the youth, particularly those in marginalized communities.
Fostering digital literacy among youth in marginalized communities requires a strategic, inclusive, and hands-on approach. Here are several ways we can achieve this:
1. Accessible Training Programs
We can organize free or low-cost digital literacy workshops tailored to youth. These should include foundational topics like internet navigation, cybersecurity, and basic digital tools such as email, social media, and productivity software. Leveraging community centers and schools as training hubs ensures proximity and accessibility.
2. Localized Content and Languages
Creating educational materials in local languages ensures the content is relatable and understandable. Youth in these communities are more likely to engage with training when it resonates with their culture and everyday context.
3. Public-Private Partnerships
Collaboration between government, private sectors, and NGOs can lead to funding, resources, and expertise for sustained digital literacy projects. For example, partnerships with tech companies can provide devices or subsidized internet access to underserved communities.
4. Leveraging Mobile Technology
Since smartphones are more accessible than computers in many marginalized areas, training programs should include mobile-friendly platforms and apps that teach digital skills. WhatsApp-based learning groups, for instance, can provide an effective entry point for youth.
5. Mentorship and Peer Education
Training young individuals to become digital mentors within their communities creates a ripple effect. These mentors can provide ongoing support, ensuring the knowledge spreads and sustains itself.
6. Gamification and Incentives
Using interactive, gamified content can make learning fun and engaging for young people. Offering certificates, badges, or small incentives upon completing training modules encourages participation and retention.
7. Infrastructure Development
Advocating for the expansion of internet infrastructure and affordable data plans is crucial. Without connectivity, digital literacy efforts may not have the impact needed in marginalized areas.
8. Content Creation Skills
Empowering youth with content creation skills—like video editing, graphic design, or social media marketing—turns digital literacy into a potential income stream. It also inspires creativity and encourages active participation in the digital economy.
9. Focus on Cybersecurity and Ethics
Teaching safe online practices ensures that youth navigate the digital world responsibly. Topics like avoiding scams, protecting personal information, and identifying fake news are critical in today’s digital landscape.
10. Storytelling and Success Stories
Highlighting young individuals from similar backgrounds who’ve successfully leveraged digital tools can inspire others. It shows that digital skills aren’t just technical—they’re transformational.
With concerted efforts and innovative approaches, we can bridge the digital divide and open doors for youth in marginalized communities to thrive in the digital era.
4. Let’s look at AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Technology. Based on your understanding of the tech world, can young Africans contribute to the adaptation and adoption of AI, If so at what stage should we begin and what skillsets does one need to acquire.
Absolutely, young Africans have immense potential to contribute to the adaptation and adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across the continent. Africa’s diversity, untapped potential, and unique challenges provide fertile ground for AI-driven innovation, and young people can play a key role in shaping its future. Here’s how:
At What Stage Should We Begin?
- Early Education:
AI awareness should start in schools through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs. Introducing concepts like coding, problem-solving, and logical thinking at an early age builds a foundation for understanding AI. - Higher Education:
Universities and technical colleges can offer specialized programs in AI, data science, and related fields. Practical experience, internships, and collaborations with tech companies should be encouraged. - Professional Training:
Continuous learning is key. Young Africans should engage in online courses, boot camps, and certifications in AI technologies, ensuring they stay updated with global trends. - Community and Grassroots Levels:
Programs targeting underserved communities can focus on basic AI literacy and how technology can solve local challenges, ensuring inclusivity.

Skillsets Needed to Contribute to AI
- Technical Skills:
- Programming and Coding: Python, R, Java, and frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch are essential for developing AI models.
- Mathematics and Statistics: A strong understanding of algorithms, linear algebra, probability, and statistics is crucial.
- Data Analytics: Skills in cleaning, analyzing, and interpreting data using tools like Excel, SQL, and Tableau.
- Domain Knowledge:
Young Africans should focus on industries where AI can have the greatest impact, such as agriculture, healthcare, education, and fintech. Understanding these sectors will allow them to design relevant solutions. - Soft Skills:
- Problem-Solving: Identifying challenges in local communities and designing AI-driven solutions.
- Collaboration: Working in diverse teams, including domain experts, programmers, and entrepreneurs.
- Creativity: Thinking outside the box to apply AI to unique African contexts.
- Entrepreneurial Mindset:
The ability to identify opportunities where AI can improve efficiency, reduce costs, or create new products. This mindset will help young Africans create startups or contribute to established tech ecosystems. - Ethical and Cultural Sensitivity:
Understanding the ethical implications of AI, including issues of bias, data privacy, and cultural relevance, is vital to ensuring AI solutions align with African values and priorities.
How Young Africans Can Contribute
- Data Collection: Developing and curating datasets that reflect African languages, cultures, and industries is critical for training AI systems tailored to local needs.
- Problem-Solving Applications: Young Africans can leverage AI to address challenges in agriculture (e.g., smart irrigation), healthcare (e.g., AI diagnostics), and education (e.g., personalized learning platforms).
- Policy Advocacy: Participating in policy discussions to ensure AI adoption is inclusive, ethical, and supports sustainable development.
- Innovation Hubs: Joining or founding tech hubs and communities to foster collaboration and resource sharing in AI innovation.
Young Africans, starting from grassroots education to professional engagement, can harness AI to solve real-world problems while positioning the continent as a global player in technology. The key is to act now, learn continuously, and innovate boldly.
5. What are some of the steepest challenges startups like yourself are facing and how can these challenges be addressed.
Startups, particularly in developing economies like Zimbabwe, face a unique set of challenges. As the founder of Krafted Ink, I’ve encountered several steep obstacles, and here’s how I believe these challenges can be addressed:
1. Limited Access to Funding
- Challenge: Many startups struggle to secure the capital needed for growth due to limited access to investors, loans, or grants.
- Solution:
- Alternative Funding Sources: Leverage crowdfunding platforms, competitions, and angel investor networks to secure funding.
- Government and NGO Support: Advocate for policies that support startup ecosystems, such as tax incentives and startup grants.
- Bootstrapping: Focus on lean operations and reinvest profits to grow organically.
2. Market Saturation and Competition
- Challenge: Many industries, such as digital marketing and design, are crowded with competitors. Standing out can be difficult for small businesses.
- Solution:
- Niche Focus: Identify underserved markets and tailor your services to address specific needs.
- Brand Differentiation: Invest in creating a strong brand identity that communicates your unique value proposition.
- Customer Experience: Deliver exceptional customer service to build loyalty and referrals.
3. Limited Digital Literacy
- Challenge: For a startup like Krafted Ink, which operates heavily in the digital space, some potential clients lack the knowledge or confidence to engage digitally.
- Solution:
- Education Campaigns: Offer free or low-cost training sessions on digital tools for potential clients.
- User-Friendly Solutions: Simplify processes, such as onboarding or accessing services, to make it easier for less tech-savvy customers.
4. Economic Instability
- Challenge: High inflation, currency fluctuations, and economic uncertainty make financial planning difficult.
- Solution:
- Diversify Income Streams: Explore multiple revenue sources to mitigate risks tied to a single market or product.
- Global Reach: Use digital platforms to access international clients and payments in stable currencies.
- Adaptability: Stay agile and ready to pivot based on economic trends.
5. Talent Retention
- Challenge: Startups often struggle to attract and retain skilled professionals due to competition from larger firms and emigration.
- Solution:
- Flexible Work Environment: Offer remote work opportunities, competitive pay, and non-monetary benefits like mentorship or professional development.
- Internship Programs: Train and nurture young talent through internship and apprenticeship initiatives.
6. Lack of Infrastructure
- Challenge: Limited access to reliable internet, electricity, or delivery networks can slow business operations.
- Solution:
- Tech Solutions: Use offline tools and solutions that function in low-infrastructure environments.
- Community Partnerships: Collaborate with other startups or organizations to share resources and infrastructure.
7. Scaling Difficulties
- Challenge: Expanding a business often requires significant resources, strategy, and connections.
- Solution:
- Strategic Partnerships: Collaborate with complementary businesses to access new markets or share operational costs.
- Automate Processes: Use technology to streamline operations and scale efficiently.
- Data-Driven Decisions: Analyze market trends and customer data to guide expansion plans.
By addressing these challenges with a proactive mindset and innovative solutions, startups can not only survive but thrive in competitive and uncertain environments. For me, the key has been adaptability, resilience, and a strong belief in the transformative power of collaboration and technology.
6. Gladys throughout your career, you have received so many recognitions to your name, these recognition which include Top entrepreneur 30 under 30 Zimbabwe award by Maycdo Lead (2022) and the Gumiguru 50 under 30 young Leaders(2021). Being recognized with accolades such as the Top Entrepreneur 30 Under 30 by MAYCDO Lead in 2022 and the Gumiguru 50 Under 30 Young Leaders in 2021 has been both humbling and transformative for my career and personal journey. These recognitions have opened doors to networking opportunities with like-minded individuals and industry leaders. Being part of these circles has enriched my knowledge, exposed me to global trends, and allowed me to collaborate with some of the brightest minds.
Enhanced Credibility
As an entrepreneur, credibility is essential, especially when building relationships with clients, partners, and investors. These accolades have added weight to my professional profile, making it easier to establish trust and secure opportunities.
A Platform for Advocacy
With recognition comes responsibility. These awards have amplified my voice and allowed me to advocate for causes close to my heart, such as digital inclusion, empowering women in business, and climate action. They’ve given me a platform to inspire others, especially young entrepreneurs, to pursue their dreams despite challenges.
Fueling My Drive
Achievements like these are a source of encouragement, but they also remind me that the journey is far from over. They’ve pushed me to aim higher, innovate further, and continuously strive to make a lasting impact in my community and beyond.
Ultimately, these experiences have taught me the value of perseverance, the importance of staying true to my purpose, and the power of community in shaping success. They’re a testament to the fact that when we work hard and align our efforts with our passions, recognition becomes not just a milestone but a stepping stone to even greater things
7. Achieving greatness is a mixture of both good and challenging phases that we pass through, while challenges are something that make other people quit and surrender to their dreams, and yet you have kept on persisting, what’s your secret in overcoming challenges
Overcoming challenges has been one of the most defining aspects of my journey, and I believe persistence is rooted in a combination of mindset, faith, and strategic action. Here’s what I’ve found to be my “secret” in navigating the highs and lows:
1. Clarity of Purpose
When your “why” is strong enough, it becomes easier to endure the challenges that come your way. My passion for empowering others, fostering creativity, and driving change keeps me grounded and motivated even when things get tough.
2. Embracing Challenges as Lessons
I view every obstacle as an opportunity to learn and grow. Challenges often reveal weaknesses in plans, systems, or even in ourselves, but they also present the chance to address those gaps and emerge stronger.
3. A Resilient Mindset
I’ve trained myself to focus on solutions instead of dwelling on problems. Resilience is a muscle that grows stronger every time you face adversity. By staying optimistic and adaptable, I’ve been able to find ways around seemingly insurmountable barriers.
4. A Strong Support System
I lean on mentors, colleagues, and loved ones for guidance and encouragement. Surrounding myself with people who believe in my vision has been instrumental in keeping my momentum alive, even during the toughest times.
5. Faith and Gratitude
Faith plays a huge role in my persistence. Believing that every challenge has a purpose and that I am guided by a higher power gives me strength. Practicing gratitude for what I have, even in the face of adversity, helps me stay grounded and focused.
6. Consistency and Discipline
I’ve learned that consistency is more important than motivation. Even when the going gets tough, showing up and taking one small step at a time keeps the momentum going. Discipline ensures that I stick to my goals even when it feels inconvenient.
7. Celebrating Small Wins
Acknowledging progress, no matter how small, keeps me inspired. These moments of celebration remind me of how far I’ve come and reinforce the belief that persistence pays off.
Ultimately, challenges are a part of the journey, not the end of it. By staying true to my vision, adapting to change, and nurturing a positive mindset, I’ve been able to push through and continue building towards greatness.
8. It is always a great thing watching our fellow youths excelling in their different fields and your astounding career and achievements is an example of the kind of leaders we need in our society. What advice would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs who want to follow up in your footprints.

Thank you for those kind words! It’s always an honor to inspire others, and my advice to aspiring entrepreneurs can be summarized in a few key points:
1. Start Where You Are
Don’t wait for the perfect moment or all the resources to align. Begin with what you have and take consistent steps forward. Small beginnings often lead to big breakthroughs.
2. Focus on Solving a Problem
The most successful businesses address real needs or gaps in the market. Identify a problem you’re passionate about solving and let that passion drive your efforts.
3. Invest in Continuous Learning
Entrepreneurship is a journey of constant growth. Stay curious, read widely, attend workshops, and embrace new skills. In today’s world, being adaptable and tech-savvy is non-negotiable.
4. Build a Strong Network
Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who challenge and inspire you. Mentors, peers, and even competitors can provide invaluable insights and opportunities.
5. Be Resilient and Embrace Failure
Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but they don’t define your journey unless you let them. Learn from every experience, refine your approach, and come back stronger. Persistence is the secret sauce of success.
6. Define Your Unique Value
What makes you stand out? Whether it’s your skills, perspective, or approach, identify and amplify your unique strengths. This is what will differentiate you in a competitive market.
7. Give Back to the Community
True leadership is about lifting others as you rise. Share your knowledge, mentor younger entrepreneurs, and create opportunities for those around you. It not only enriches your community but also deepens your sense of purpose.
8. Stay True to Your Vision
There will be moments of doubt and discouragement, but remember why you started. Keep your vision clear, and let it be your guiding star even when the path gets tough.
Aspiring entrepreneurs should remember that success is a marathon, not a sprint. With hard work, resilience, and a commitment to growth, they can achieve incredible things—and I can’t wait to see what they’ll accomplish!
